A Tmedia gateway already terminates T1, E1, DS3 and SS7 and converts all of it to SIP. Adding ProSBC hands the same unit the IP side of the border: session border control, topology hiding, DoS and fraud protection, and registration proxying to your softswitch.

What the gateway gains
Session border control
A full B2BUA at the IP edge with SIP normalisation, header manipulation, topology hiding, TLS and SRTP, DoS and DDoS mitigation, dynamic blacklisting and rule-based routing.
SIP registration proxying
Registrations are accepted at the gateway and forwarded to your registrar, which takes the load and the exposure off the core.
Survivability across all three
The gateway already keeps TDM and SIP trunk service running through a core outage. Local SIP survivability extends the same protection to registered users, so copper subscribers, TDM trunks and SIP endpoints all stay up on one unit.
ENUM lookups
ENUM does not run natively on the gateway. Adding the SBC brings it to the unit.
One unit to support
One chassis, one serial number, one support relationship covering the gateway and the SBC together.
Fraud and call authentication
STIR/SHAKEN signing and verification through your existing signing service, plus per-call fraud screening at the same edge.

Registration proxy in front of the softswitch
The most common reason by some distance. The gateway accepts SIP registrations locally, restricted by IP range or VPN, and forwards them securely upstream. Your softswitch stops fielding registration attempts from the whole internet, and the registration load moves off the core.
Survivability at the site
When the link to the core drops, the unit keeps TDM subscribers, SIP trunk routes and SIP registered users alive, including local calls and emergency routing over secondary paths. Copper subscribers, TDM survivability and registered endpoints all carry on from the same box until the link is restored.
ENUM
Operators with an ENUM requirement cannot meet it on the gateway alone. Adding the SBC is the supported route.
Small interconnects
Session control, topology hiding and traffic policing at a boundary with another operator, on the same unit already handling the TDM interconnect. This fits interconnects that sit inside the capacity above, not a carrier peering point.
Access SBC before IMS or a softswitch
Protecting and normalising everything arriving from access networks and endpoints before it reaches the core.
Consolidating a central office
Sites in the middle of a network transformation or a GR-303 modernisation where reducing the equipment count is part of the business case.

If you already own the hardware, there is very little for you to do. You buy the ProSBC licence and tell us which unit it belongs to. The TelcoBridges team handles the installation and configuration remotely, at no charge.
Buy a ProSBC licence from the TelcoBridges customer dashboard, sized to the sessions you need.
Tell us which Tmedia unit it is for. The licence is provisioned against that unit’s serial number and tied to its support record.
Our support team installs and configures ProSBC on the unit remotely, at no charge, in a window agreed with your engineers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my gateway stop being a gateway?
No. SS7 ISUP, SIGTRAN, ISDN PRI, CAS, H.248 and GR-303 all keep working, and your TDM configuration is left alone. The unit takes on the SBC role in addition to what it already did.
Which Tmedia units can take the SBC?
Eligibility depends on the model, the installed software version and the unit’s support status, so it is checked per serial number rather than answered generally. Some units need a software upgrade first, which is included in the conversion. Send your serial numbers and we will tell you exactly which ones qualify.
Can I install another vendor’s SBC on my Tmedia gateway?
No. ProSBC is the only session border controller that can be installed on a Tmedia gateway. It runs on the unit’s own host processor, and ProSBC is the only SBC TelcoBridges supports in that position. A third-party SBC has to run on separate hardware alongside the gateway.
Can the same unit transcode as well?
No. Adding the SBC and converting a unit for transcoding are mutually exclusive on one chassis, because both want the same resources. If you need transcoding and session border control in the same network, that means two units, with the Ttrans gateways handling the transcoding side. It is the single most important thing to plan around.
Is there downtime?
Yes, and it needs a planned maintenance window. Session handling moves onto the unit’s host processor, which is not a change to make on live traffic. Your TelcoBridges engineer will give you the expected duration for your specific units once the sizing is agreed.
Can I do the conversion myself?
No. TelcoBridges support performs the installation and configuration, and there is no charge for it. You buy the licence from the TelcoBridges customer dashboard and tell us which unit it is for, and our team does the rest remotely, in a window agreed with your engineers.
Will the SBC keep my subscribers up if the core goes down?
Yes, for all three kinds of subscriber. The gateway has always kept TDM subscribers and SIP trunk routes running through a core outage, including local calls and emergency routing over secondary paths. Local SIP survivability brings registered users under the same protection, so copper subscribers, TDM trunks and SIP endpoints all keep working from the one unit until the link to the core comes back.
What if I need an SBC but have no Tmedia gateway?
Two routes. Order a Tmedia gateway with ProSBC already provisioned and installed, which arrives ready to do both jobs, or deploy ProSBC as software on your own platform. If there is no TDM in the picture and you already run virtualisation, software is usually the better fit.
